Ever looked at something and thought, “What is that?”
Maybe it was a plant sitting in someone’s house, a pair of shoes you saw on Instagram, a strange building while travelling, or a sign written in a language you don’t understand.
You could try describing it to Google.
Or you could just take a picture.
That’s basically the idea behind Google Lens. It lets you search for things you can see instead of trying to describe them with words. You can use a photo, your camera, a screenshot, or even something you’re already looking at in Chrome.
And once you start using it, you realise Google Lens is useful for much more than identifying random objects.
What is Google Lens?
Google Lens is Google’s visual search tool.
Instead of typing a search such as “black shoes with white sole and red logo”, you can show Google the shoes and let Lens work out what you’re looking at.
From there, you might get similar images, websites, product information, text from the image, translations, or other information related to what you’ve photographed.
The nice thing is that you don’t have to know the right words first.
That is where Lens really earns its place.
Google currently offers Lens through the Google app and Google Photos, and it is also built into Chrome on desktop. Some Android phones have Lens available directly through their camera app.
How do you use Google Lens?
The easiest way is through the Google app on your phone.
Open the Google app and look for the Lens icon in the search bar. Tap it, then point your camera at whatever you want to search.
You can also choose an image already saved on your phone.
Once Lens has an image, you can select the part you’re interested in and see the results.
That last part is easy to overlook.
You don’t always want to search the entire picture.
Imagine you have a photo of a living room and you’re interested in the lamp. Select the lamp rather than giving Lens the entire room. Google supports selecting part of an image specifically so you can focus the search.
That small change can make a visual search much more useful.
What can you actually do with Google Lens?
This is where Google Lens gets interesting.
It’s tempting to think of Lens as an app that identifies plants and that’s it. It has grown well beyond that.
Identify something you don't recognize
See a flower you don’t know?
Take a picture.
Found an interesting dog breed, landmark, painting or object?
Try Lens.
Google specifically lists plants, animals, artwork and landmarks among the things you can explore with Lens.
Of course, don’t blindly trust an identification when the answer matters. If you’re trying to identify something that could affect your health, safety or money, treat the Lens result as a starting point and check reliable sources.
For ordinary curiosity, though, it’s remarkably convenient.
Translate text without typing it
This is one of those features that becomes useful the moment you need it.
You’re travelling. There’s a menu in front of you. You don’t know what half of it says.
Open Lens and point your camera at it.
Google says Lens can translate menus, signs, handwriting and other text into Google Translate-supported languages.
It saves you from copying unfamiliar words letter by letter.
And yes, that matters more than it sounds.
Copy text from a photo
Have you ever needed to type something that’s already printed on paper?
A poster.
A page from a book.
A handwritten note.
A sign.
Lens can recognise text in an image so you can work with it digitally rather than typing everything yourself. Google also supports copying text from images through Lens.
It’s particularly handy for small bits of text that would be annoying to type manually.
For important information, though, check the copied text before using it. Numbers, names and unusual characters deserve a second look.
Can Google Lens find a product from a picture?
Yes, and this is probably one of the most useful reasons to keep Lens in mind.
You see a jacket online.
You like a chair in someone’s living-room photo.
Someone posts a pair of shoes and doesn’t mention the brand.
Instead of trying to describe the item in Google, search the picture.
Google says Lens can help identify products and show information such as prices, deals, reviews and where to buy when product information is available.
You can also refine a visual search with words.
So instead of simply looking for a jacket that resembles the one in your photo, you could add details about the colour, pattern or style you’re after. Google’s current Lens product page describes combining visual searches with text to narrow shopping results.
That’s much closer to how people actually shop.
You start with “I want that.”
Then you figure out what it is.
How to use Google Lens on a computer
You don’t have to send an image from your computer to your phone just to use Lens.
Google Lens is built into Chrome on desktop.
Open a page in Chrome, right-click and choose Search this tab with Google Lens, or use the Lens option from Chrome’s menu. You can then select something on the page and search it.
This is particularly useful when you’re researching something.
Suppose you’re reading an article and notice a piece of furniture in an image. Instead of downloading the image, opening another website and uploading it, you can search what you’re seeing directly from Chrome.
You can also use Google Search on a computer to upload an image, drag an image into the search box, or search using an image URL.
Google Lens vs reverse image search: are they the same?
Not quite.
They overlap, which is why people sometimes use the terms interchangeably, but the purpose is slightly different.
A traditional reverse image search is useful when you’re trying to find where an image appears online or locate visually similar images.
Google Lens is more about understanding what you’re looking at.
For example, you might use Lens because you want to know:
- What object is this?
- What plant is this?
- What does this sign say?
- Where can I buy this product?
- What is this landmark?
- What does this image show?
Google’s own documentation says Lens results can include AI Overviews, objects identified in an image, similar images and websites containing the image or a similar image.
So don’t think of Lens as simply “Google reverse image search with a different name.”
It has become a broader visual search tool.
Can Google Lens search an image from a website?
Yes.
On Android, for example, you can open a website in Chrome, press and hold an image and choose Search image with Google Lens. You can then adjust the selection and refine the search with additional keywords.
This is useful when you stumble across an image and want to know more about one particular thing inside it.
Again, selecting the right part matters.
If the photo contains five products and you only want to identify one, tell Lens which one you’re interested in.
Don’t make it solve a bigger puzzle than necessary.
What if Google Lens gives you the wrong result?
It happens.
A visual search isn’t magic, and the quality of the result depends partly on what you’re giving it.
A blurry photograph isn’t going to suddenly become a perfect product catalogue entry.
If your first search isn’t useful, try a few simple changes.
Get a clearer picture.
If possible, move closer to the object or photograph it from another angle.
Select a smaller area.
If you’re interested in one object, don’t search the entire photograph.
Add words to the search.
Google supports refining Lens searches with keywords and questions.
And don’t be afraid to search twice.
That’s probably the biggest mistake people make with visual search: they see an unhelpful first result and assume Lens doesn’t work.
Sometimes the first photograph simply wasn’t giving Google enough information.
Google Lens can also answer questions about what you're seeing
This is where Lens has become more interesting than the old “identify this plant” version people remember.
Google says you can point Lens at something and ask a question about it. Its current Lens experience also supports asking questions about what you see and exploring the resulting information.
For example, you might photograph a piece of artwork and ask about the artist or style.
Or point Lens at something you’re unfamiliar with and ask what it is used for.
Google has also added voice input to Lens, allowing users to ask questions aloud while using the camera in the Google app.
That makes the interaction feel much more natural.
Instead of:
Take photo → type question → search
you can increasingly do:
Point camera → ask question → look at the answer.
What is “About this image” in Google Lens?
This is a feature worth knowing about if you spend a lot of time looking at images online.
About this image gives you more context about an image and how it appears across the web. Google says it can help you see information from different sources and understand how an image is being used online.
That’s useful when an image comes with a questionable claim.
Instead of immediately believing the caption attached to a picture, you can investigate the image itself.
It’s not a guarantee that you’ll get a definitive answer. But it’s a useful extra step when you’re trying to understand where an image came from or how it has been presented elsewhere.
Google Lens is getting better at understanding multiple things in one image
Here’s something that makes visual search more interesting than it used to be.
Google has been improving the way Search and Lens understand multiple objects within the same image. In a 2026 explanation of its visual-search technology, Google described Lens and Circle to Search being able to search multiple objects within a single image.
Think about a photo of an outfit.
There isn’t just one thing to identify. There might be a shirt, trousers, shoes, watch and bag.
Being able to understand those separate objects makes visual search much more useful for shopping and research.
This is one area where I expect visual search to become more normal over time. Instead of treating a photograph as one search query, Google is increasingly able to understand what’s happening inside the picture.
Is Google Lens worth using?
Yes — especially if you frequently find yourself searching for things you don’t know how to describe.
That’s the real advantage.
If you already know the name of something, typing it into Google is usually quicker.
But when you don’t know the name, a picture is sometimes the better search query.
A photo of an unfamiliar chair can be more useful than a paragraph trying to describe the chair.
A photo of a foreign-language sign is more useful than guessing how to spell the words.
A photo of a product can be a much better starting point than trying to remember its brand.
That’s where Google Lens fits.
It doesn’t replace normal Google Search. It gives you another way to start a search.
A few Google Lens tips I would actually use
Don’t overcomplicate it.
Take the clearest picture you can.
If there are several things in the photo, select the one you care about.
If the result is too broad, add a word or two to explain what you’re looking for.
If the first result looks wrong, try another photo rather than giving up.
And if the information matters, verify it from a reliable source.
That last one is worth keeping in mind as visual search becomes more AI-powered. A confident-looking answer is still something you should check when the consequences of getting it wrong are serious.
Final thoughts
Google Lens is one of those Google features that sounds like a small convenience until you actually need it.
Then you realise how annoying it used to be to describe something you couldn’t name.
“What is this?”
Take a picture.
“Where can I buy this?”
Take a picture.
“What does this sign say?”
Take a picture.
“What is that thing in this photo?”
Select it.
That’s the appeal of Google Lens. You don’t have to know the right search words before you start.
If you’ve never really used it, try it the next time you see something you can’t identify. Start with one object, select it carefully, and see what Google finds.
